KIM IL SUNG's Children
Director Deog Young Kim in Feature Doc Korea, Republic of 01:25:00 Children who were shaped by Kim Il-Sung's ideal instead of Stalin’s. From 1950 to 1953 One hundred thousand children were orphaned by the Korean War. With no resources to mend the wounds, the two sides, North and South, took different paths to find homes and families for the war orphans. While the children of South Korea were sent to Europe and the United States through ‘International Adoption’, the children of North Korea were distributed across Eastern Europe through a method called ‘Commissioned Education’. As a result, more than five thousand children from the North had to spend nearly a decade living in foreign lands across Eastern Europe. Children who were shaped by Kim IL Sung's ideals, instead of Stalin's. Their lives remained unknown by the rest of the world until now. WATCH ON VIMEO https://vimeo.com/446303976 password: 2020 |

A Yearning: If only the war never happened
Director Jihoon Kang in Short Film (any genre), Animation Korea, Republic of 4:02While preparing for my entry, I couldn’t help but find myself interested in learning about the causalities of war and especially how women were affected in the aftermath. The women of war fall victim to cruel and unusual abuse not only physically, but maybe even deeper, mentally. Before diving deeper into this topic, I had a vague and minimal picture of what had actually happened to women in the war, but once I had both feet in, and I learned the wicked deeds done to these women, I could not help but stopping myself for a moment and balling my eyes out. The physical and mental suffering did not end once the peace treaties were signed, instead those wounds deepened and became scars that the female victims had to live with for the rest of their lives in constant reminder in every moment going forward similar to PTSD found in soldiers. Studying more, I found myself wondering what these women’s lives might have looked like if their innocence and future were still intact had not been snuffed out in front of their eyes with no other choice left to be found. Through my animation, I recreate a world where these women victims would have lived happily with their families and have the chance to pursue their own dreams in life. I felt that this was the least I could do in order to shed light and recognition into the lives of the victims and to encourage and cheer them to continue to stay strong and make sure they know without a shadow of a doubt that they not to blame for what happened to them. Moving forward, female victims of warring countries should be further assisted and recognized in order to reduce the occurrence of these events in current warring countries and wars going future. By better learning about the devastating effects war has on mankind and its future generations, we must avoid going to war at all costs as much as possible. The structure of my animation is organized so that the image of a grandma is the starting point of reference and a reverse-chronological order of events takes place highlighting the hardships bared during their lifetime up until the point of the war when they fell victim. Then the animation continues in a chronological order of events highlighting what type of life she might have lived out in this fictitious world. Using the subjunctive of “what if,” I was able to better illustrate and organize my thoughts into this animation. |

Resisting the Genocide - The Indigenous Struggle in Brazil
Director Lucca Messer in Short Doc Brazil 4:00The genocide of the indigenous peoples of Brazil began when the Portuguese colonised the country back in the 1500s. Today, with ultra conservative policies put in place by president Jair Bolsonaro, and his party PSL, indigenous communities are mobilising to resist against policies that seek to weaken, and potentially wipe communities off the map. I headed to the Piaçaguera indigenous land, located only an hour and a half from São Paulo - Latin America's biggest city -, with a camera and a microphone to listen firsthand to what the community had to say. The indigenous struggle against Brazil's far-right policies isn't to be taken for granted. On a daily basis, indigenous people from Piaçaguera are not only threatened by big corporations that attempt to suspend the official indigenous land demarcation to put forward commercial plans, they're also threatened by civilians who physically and verbally abuse members of the tribes. A behavioural trend that seems to have been galvanised by Bolsonaro's hate rhetoric. As of the beginning of the year, his government has taken the responsibility for indigenous land demarcation away from FUNAI, the Indigenous affairs department, and giving it to the Agriculture Ministry, opening up room for their land to more easily exploited. However, the people from Piaçaguera - and all indigenous communities across Brazil - stand together to preserve their rights and traditions in the current scenario. |

TOUCH OF GREY
Writer Daniel Talamantes
in Feature Screenplay
United States The story follows an acerbic late-twenties writer, Liam, and his free-spirited twin sister, Louise, on their way home from a boat harbor in the Bay Area of California to their brooding coastal hometown of Crescent, California for the Celtic Midsummer's Ceremony. Visiting multiple iconic Northern California locations in the plot it alternates between two timelines: one with both Liam and Louise, and the other, solely with Liam after Louise has passed away. On this drive they run into other aimless individuals -- a gothic barista, a traveling hippy girl and her dog, a retired couple who travels from KOA campgrounds across the US, a sassy but aimless tech girl -- all who've been both positively and negatively effected by the hippy/counterculture lifestyle pervasive in the previous generation. Ultimately, the story's about the strained relations they have with their divorced parents who can't seem to face reality or take responsibility for the trauma that occurred specifically to Louise. It's a repressed relationship in which negativity cannot be addressed and which left Liam and Louise to fend for themselves. After Louise passes, Liam spent so much of his life supporting her, that he is now trying to fill the void she left behind.

Darci Falling, a middle-aged, unmarried New Yorker thought she had found her special thing going to open mics and trying her hand at stand-up comedy. That was seven years ago. Her days are now spent clock watching and working the desk of a one-man fabric company in the garment district. Her evenings are spent in performance spaces and comedy rooms sharing the stage with other comics who use their 3-5 minutes to work on new material, mental health issues, or both. Darci’s never had a good set, not even a sustained laugh. It’s safe to say Darci has never killed. Until one night, between open mics, Darci is followed by a strange man and attacked. In self-defense she accidentally kills the man. In a shocked state, she takes the stage and has the set of her life.
Darci quickly realizes the only way she can kill on stage is to kill off. But as her local fame and need for laughter grows, Darci is dying an existential death. She is desperate to be taken seriously, and the last thing she wants now is to be laughed at. After finally realizing there is nothing she can do to change what she has become, Darci takes the stage to a sold out audience and gives them a performance of a lifetime - a show she can only do once.

TOUCH OF GREY
Writer Daniel Talamantes
