Living years, documentary, 38:26
Director Brenda Gillis Gale Williams had a happy, normal childhood in Santa Monica California. Then, in 1956, on the eve of his 18th birthday he crashed his car in a remote area of California and became a quadriplegic. In those days people with such severe injuries were only expected to live 10-15 years. To survive, mentally and physically, Gale set his mind to tackling small goals, focusing only on what he was able to do, and through a supportive family and church community, he rebuilt his life. He studied computer programming at UCLA in the 1960's, worked for an air defense company, married and adopted two children. After the disappointment of divorce and suffering discrimination by employers, Gale gradually became involved in disabled rights activism. He attended demonstrations in the 1970's to recognize the needs of the disabled community that were being neglected, and became state president of California's Association for Physically Handicapped. He remarried, had two more children, and continued to inspire and educate a new generation of young people, both disabled and able-bodied. At 82, and most likely the longest living quadriplegic, Gale's life story shows us that there are no limitations to what we can accomplish if we set our minds to it. TRAILER |

EXPLORER, animation, 04:43
Director I Ting Kao Over the course of human history. There have always been social frames and stereotypes that tell us what we should do at different stages in our life. Most of the time we don’t exercise free choice, but follow the rules of society. “The Explorer” is a short 3D animated film that is also a dark comedy. During an exploratory journey to another planet, a young explorer, Bob, finds himself slowly losing what makes him unique. The look of the film is bright, playful, and toy-like, in an ironic contrast to the underlying dark tone of the story. This juxtaposition makes for a viewing experience that is both complex and entertaining. |

Jimi, Janis and Jim Must Die
Submitter John Arnau
in Feature Screenplay
United States President Nixon hatches a cunning plan to win the drug war by killing popular musicians who are leaders of the drug counterculture and making it look like accidental overdoses.
In July 1970, Americans are paralyzed with fear as they watch the terrifying spectacle of the Manson trial on television. People who formerly viewed the teen flower children as peaceful hippies, now see these same young people as drug-infested, degenerate psychopaths who want to kill anyone that is part of the normal world. At this very moment, President Nixon sees a tremendous opportunity to win the drug war in America. If a few popular musicians who are leaders of the hippie drug culture were to die of accidental overdoses within a short period of time, this will badly scare many young people who are using drugs, making them want to quit and come back home to their parents and to the respectable American life that they left behind. Targets must be selected that have well known drug addictions so that there will be no questions about their deaths. Therefore, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison, must die.
Jimi, Janis and Jim Must Die is a what-if suspense thriller and fantasy. This screenplay is by no means non-fiction. It is a completely fictional account. However, the story is compelling because the traditional narrative of the “accidental” deaths of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison isn’t believable for many Americans, including the writer of this screenplay. Jimi, Janis and Jim Must Die was written as an alternative explanation of what could have happened and why it had to happen.

The villagers are pretty ordinary too; Father Joe, a clubfooted priest who likes to dance; Duffy the bar owner who runs a great pub; Stochelo a Gypsy bandolier and his mighty son Miquel; Eamonn McGarvey who loved his pet pig; Ludmilla the one handed Ukrainian Headmistress who escaped the anti-Jewish pogroms of 1881; Mary-Ellen the village elder, wise-woman, and nurse in the Crimean War; Vincenti Quilto the Italian Matchmaker and teller of unlikely fables; Father Dan, a guilt ridden whiskey priest decorated for bravery in the First World war and The Diabhal (Devil) also comes calling intent upon mischief. So, just an unremarkable Irish village going about its daily business; hum-drum times punctuated by birth, death, love, not much hate (except the Devil for whom hate is his only purpose).

LOGLINE:
An American Indian and her female drinking buddy who’s from twelve-light-years away threaten to neutralize the electricity on earth unless all nuclear weapons are immediately buried.
SYNOPSIS:
Thousands of docile aliens from planet Nexkar (Tau-Ceti ‘e’) are on earth studying our culture, assimilating, and breeding with us.
Nexkarians patrol the planets, including the earth, in the Orion Spur. They rescue humans and other species that were abducted for consumption by Kaolin ETs from the Alpha Centauri triple star system.
The Nexkarians found that the offspring of these rescued humans are very suitable to pilot their battle-flying saucers.
One of these Nexkarians is an audacious woman, CAROL ROYAL. Her earthling drinking buddy is an ex-army officer called DAKODA, who is very proud of her native south-western Paiute Indian heritage and the American way. She wanted to become an astronaut someday, but instead, the army paid off her college debt and later award her the Silver Star and the Purple Heart.
Dakoda discovers that her drinking buddy is from the Tau-Ceti star system that is twelve light-years away and keeps a cloaked saucer hidden in Area-51, near Las Vegas. Carol uses that saucer to transport equipment to earth and bootleg beer and hotdogs for the human abductees back on her home planet.
Her Nexkarian race is advanced in technology and IQ but they are chicken-shits.
After an evening of drinking, Dakoda gets abducted from earth by three hungry meat-eating Kaolin ETs from the Alpha Centauri triple star system. Carol chases the Kaolins in her private flying saucer that she purchased from casino winnings with her telekinesis abilities at craps. Meanwhile, Dakoda, while bloody and wounded, kicks those Kaolin asses without her drinking buddy's help.
Carol finds Dakoda and rushes her to the Stella Hospital on Nexkar to have her drinking buddy's bloody wounds treated and to eradicate the virus she contracted from the Kaolins before it dissolves her brain.
After being released from the hospital, Dakoda experiences shocking social and cultural differences on her new planet to include the food that she strongly detests. She also meets some other rescued human abductees that the FBI would love to handcuff and another that Las Vegas would love to have back.
On an afternoon, Carol’s Nexkar beach community is attacked by some hungry meat-eating Kaolins. Some of Dakoda’s Nexkarian alien acquaintances get abducted or killed during the assault. Dakoda kicks a few of the Kaolin asses until the rest of them had enough and escape in their flying saucers.
Carol’s Nexkarian husband is found partially eaten and dead on the beach surf. This gives Carol more justifiable resolve to hunt down and kill those Kaolins.
Dakoda gives her new Nexkarian friends some courage by teaching them how to defend themselves and kick ass by using their hands.
Carol and Dakoda depart planet Nexkar with a fleet of three dozen flying battle saucers. They find the rival Kaolin base on the far side of the earth’s moon. Carol's armada of 36 saucers battles the evil Kaolins' hundred-plus saucers.
The war is fought with huge colorful explosions in the moon’s orbit that are seen from the earth. This freaks out the earthlings and the president is rushed into the White House basement.
After the war and upon landing in front of a Las Vegas casino, Carol and Dakoda must now stop the possible nuclear annihilation of earthlings from their most formidable aggressor. . . Humans!

United States
A woman is pushed over the edge of her terrace overlooking a rocky cliff with ocean beneath. It is not certain who she is or whether she survives. Flash forward to a young handsome Mexican couple (Juan and Rosa) celebrating on the same terrace. Flashback three years earlier: Juan (30s) handsome Mexican man, is building the very same terrace. Liliane (50s) and her husband Elliot (70s) have just moved to Baja from the US after retiring. Elliot wants the house to be perfect for his wife and has enlisted Juan to make it happen. Liliane innocently admires Juan's good looks but wouldn’t dare act upon her desire. Elliot and Liliane treat Juan like the son they never had. Juan recommends an acquaintance, Rosa to come to work for the couple as a cook and housekeeper. Rosa is young and sexy in a demure way. Liliane feels jealous when her husband and his friend ogle at Rosa at a party. It is not long before Elliot suffers a heart attack and is rushed to the hospital in San Diego. Liliane and Juan strike up a passionate romance after a night out while Elliot is gone. Elliot returns after a few days, his health greatly deteriorated. He is now confined to a separate room where a nurse must attend to his needs. Liliane and Juan become more heavily involved as Elliot condition worsens. Elliot takes a tragic fall, and, against her better judgment, Liliane allows Juan to convince her to hold off on calling the ambulance. Juan smothers Elliot with a pillow while Liliane is out of the room. Liliane experiences guilt and confides everything to her psychiatrist, including her affair with Juan. A fellow French neighbor, Yves, a gay man, with flamboyant style, falls upon hard times and asks if Liliane will give him a room in exchange for minor household chores. While Liliane is away visiting family, Yves discovers Juan is having a romance with Rosa. Afraid of being exposed by Yves, Juan tries to frame Yves for killing Liliane’s dog. Liliane does not want to believe Yves when he tells her about Juan and Rosa and the dog. It is revealed in Liliane’s psychiatric sessions that she suffered abuse at the hand of her father and has a fear of being alone and survived multiple suicide attempts. Juan's volatile nature triggers those painful memories, causing her panic attacks. Liliane is unable to escape the relationship because she is paralyzed by her fear of being alone. Juan manipulates Liliane using her own guilt and her insecurity about her age. Even though Liliane is afraid of Juan, her attraction to him is overpowering. She begins drinking more to cope. When Liliane confronts Juan about Rosa, he explodes and embarks upon a plot to kill her for her money. Flash forward to the opening scene when Liliane is pushed off the edge of the terrace. It is now revealed that Liliane survived the fall. A local Mexican fisherman comes to her aid. He and his wife nurse Liliane back to health. Once recovered, she flies to Mexico City, where she and Elliot own an apartment. A montage sequence shows her transformation as she undergoes a series of surgeries, physical therapy sessions and how she later emerges as a newly improved, stronger woman. Flash forward 1 year later, Liliane returns to the same community posing as an American with hair extensions and facial reconstruction. She has a plan to exact revenge and manages to fool Juan with her altered identity. Being the type of man he is, he is immediately seduced by her looks. Because she learns Rosa is pregnant, she leaves her out of it. She manages to get Juan alone, and they have spontaneous passionate sex, during which time her true identity is revealed. There is a struggle, and Juan tries to kill Liliane for a second time. But Rosa surprises them and kills Juan in a jealous rage. Liliane regains her self-esteem, reconciles with Rosa and embraces an unconventional life with a new family.
